From the castle you can step directly into to Bunderbos for a short (or long) walk. The forest ribbons along for about 6 kilometres from Elsloo to Bunde. On your way, you can find many springs, waterfalls, rivers and views of the surroundings. Perhaps even a kingfisher might cross your path
When walking through the Bunderbos in springtime, all around you will see the hills covered with ramsons. This protected plant species is noticeable for its strong smell like onions. It is rather rare in Belgium and the Netherlands, but it is flourishing extensively in our Bunderbos.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the new owners, Count and Countess Geloes created an English style park around the castle for their own private use. Looking out from their pergola they could see the castle and its wonderful garden. It is only since 1960 that the park has been open to the villagers from Elsloo, after it was purchased by the municipality.
In 2011, the ambitious restoration project of the castle park won the prestigious award "Buitenleven Natuur en Erfgoed" (Outdoor living, Nature and Heritage). Part of the prize was a sum of money to be used for new flowers and grass areas, the planting of new trees, and the restoration of original footpaths. The castle park is getting back to its original form as quickly as it can.
In the botanical garden, located next to the castle, you can walk along scenic little pathways next to rare trees (such as the Japanese walnut tree and the silk tree), many kinds of fern and colourful hostas – a treat for nature lovers. This beautiful garden is managed by IVN Elsloo and has limited opening hours from April to October.
The botanical garden is located on a hill that was shaped by the Slakbeek valley and an offshoot of the old Maas riverbank. In addition to the large variety of plants and trees from all over the world, the botanical garden also has many herbs with medicinal, cultural historical or magical values.
What do fire salamanders, the slow-worm, the kingfisher, the Eurasian hobby, the polecat, the bank vole, the rare Brandt’s bat and twenty types of dragonflies all have in common? The answer is that they all currently live in the Bunderbos. In addition, the Bunderbos is also the home of one of the oldest badger sets in the Netherlands.
