3 special Castles in Limburg that you must have seen

Limburg is rich in castles, but some places are really worth visiting. In this blog we take you along three special castles in Limburg: Limbricht Castle, Elsloo Castle and Montfort Castle. Each with a unique history, its own atmosphere and a surprising experience. Ideal for a cultural day out or a short vacation at home.

Limbricht Castle: a medieval motte with a contemporary soul

Limbricht Castle is situated on a historic motte hill and has a history dating back to the 11th century. The current castle, with courtyard, tower and chapel, still exudes the atmosphere of yesteryear.

Today, Limbricht Castle is much more than a monument. You can walk there with an audio tour full of stories from the past, including that of Entgen Luijten - the "last witch of the Netherlands. Enjoy a local beer on the terrace, stay overnight in stylish rooms or attend one of the many events. Here, history and hospitality merge into a unique experience.

Elsloo Castle: a hushed story on the edge of the forest

Elsloo Castle has an eventful history. The castle once stood right on the Meuse River until the river washed away the main building in the 15th century. What remained are the charming economy buildings, a neo-Gothic tower and a still-operating water mill.

Today, you will find an oasis of tranquility here. Take a walk through the romantic castle park, take a seat in the restaurant or book a room in the boutique hotel. Whether you come to relax, taste or simply enjoy the surroundings - Castle Elsloo will leave a lasting impression.

Montfort Castle: ruin with grandeur

Montfort Castle is one of the oldest and largest castles in the Netherlands. Built in the 13th century as a defensive structure, it is now partly ruined - but it is precisely this ruin that makes it so impressive.

During a visit, you can explore the remains of the towers and walls, participate in a guided tour or attend an event. Its location in the green Vlootbeek valley also makes it a popular spot for hikers and peace seekers. This is where history really comes alive.

The Groote Molen in Meerssen (on the Geul) has a rich history: mentioned as early as 968 in a gift from Queen Gerberga, while the current water wheel dates from 1778. A double horizontal turbine from 1931 and later coupled to a generator (1986) mark the industrial developments. Today the mill is no longer grinding, but is fully intact and recognizable. Beautiful photo stop or starting point for walking and cycling tours along the Geul.
