Limburg is perhaps the most beautiful province in the Netherlands for cycling. With rolling hills, picturesque villages, vast nature reserves and well-maintained cycling junctions, it is the ideal region for both recreational cyclists and avid cyclists. In this blog, we share 7 of the most beautiful cycling routes in Limburg - including stops for a good glass of Limburg wine or lunch in a castle.
1. Maasvallei Cycle Route (Elsloo - Thorn).
This approximately 45-kilometer route follows the Meuse River and winds through picturesque villages such as Elsloo, Stein, Maasbracht and the white town of Thorn. Along the way you will enjoy wide open views, floodplains and terraces along the water. Start for example at Castle Elsloo, where you can also have lunch or stay overnight afterwards.
2. Around South Limburg (Valkenburg - Gulpen - Vaals).
A classic for those who love climbing and descending. This route takes you along marl country roads, castles, half-timbered houses and panoramic views. Along the way you will pass Kasteel Schaloen and the Drielandenpunt, among others.
3. Hill Country Route
This 50 to 60 kilometer route often starts in Maastricht and returns via Bemelen, Margraten and Epen. Along the way, you cycle past vineyards of the Apostelhoeve and De Wijngaardsberg, among others. A stop at one of these wine estates completes your tour.
4. Round Hompesche Mill
Start your route at the Hompesche Molen in Stevensweert and cycle a tour of approximately 35 kilometers along the Maasplassen, the fortified town of Stevensweert and the Wijffelterbroek nature reserve. Don't forget to taste the home-brewed beer "De Graaf van Hompesch" afterwards.
5. The castles route Central Limburg
This route of about 55 kilometers takes you past several castles and estates between Echt, Montfort, Sint Odiliénberg and Posterholt. Montfort Castle is a wonderful stop for a cultural break and a well-stocked picnic basket.
6. Cross-border cycling at Vaals
This tour of about 60 km takes you across the border, with stops in Aachen and the Belgian Voerstreek. Perfect for those who want to combine nature and culture with tough calves.
7. Round All in Sterling for families
For families there is a nice, flat route of about 20 km around Echt. Perfect to combine with an activity at All in Echt, such as bowling or a drink after the bike ride.
