Limburg wines have risen in popularity at a breakneck pace in recent years - and rightly so. The combination of an ideal microclimate, calcareous soil and craftsmanship of local winemakers creates wines of international standard. In this blog, we take you into the world of the best Limburg wines, introduce a number of leading vineyards and let you know where you can taste these gems for yourself.
Why Limburg wines are so special
Viticulture in Limburg has deep roots. Already in Roman times, wine was made along the Meuse River. But it is mainly in the past 30 years that Limburg has really put itself on the map as a wine region.
What makes Limburg unique:
- Calcareous soils, similar to the Champagne region
- Southern slopes with lots of sunshine
- Small, artisan wineries
- Focus on quality over quantity
The result: fresh, elegant white wines, sophisticated sparkling wines, characterful reds and surprising cuvées.
The best Limburg wines according to connoisseurs and enthusiasts
What really are the best Limburg wines of the moment? We list some of the best - all available (and tasting!) at Kasteel Elsloo.
2021 Brut - Wijngaardsberg (Ulestraten) 1.
A top-level sparkling wine. This brut from De Wijngaardsberg is fresh, dry and has a fine bubble reminiscent of champagne. Perfect as an aperitif or with refined dishes.
Available at Castle Elsloo - €65 per bottle
2. 2023 Riesling - Wijngaard Op gen Hoes (Margraten)
A fresh and aromatic riesling with notes of citrus, apple and minerality. A real terroir wine from Limburg soil.
3. Cuvée XII - Apostelhoeve (Maastricht)
One of Holland's best-known wineries delivers a masterpiece with this cuvée. The blend of riesling, auxerrois and pinot gris is fruity, full-bodied and soft.
Recommended for with light fish dishes or a summer dinner on the terrace.
4. Auxerrois 2024 - Wine Estate Thorn
This white wine is smooth, round and slightly spicy. Made from the auxerrois grape that feels perfectly at home in Limburg. Great for appetizers or light salads.
5. Pinot Gris 2023 - De Wijngaardsberg
A full-bodied white wine with aromas of peach, pear and something of vanilla. The Pinot Gris from De Wijngaardsberg has been among the best of its kind for years.
6. Chardonnay 2022 - De Wijngaardsberg
Creamy, subtly wood-aged, with notes of citrus and nuts. A chardonnay with international allure, but from Limburg soil.
Tip: pair it with a creamy pasta or poultry.
7. Dornfelder 2023 - Thorn Wine Estate
This red wine is fruity, supple and elegant. The Dornfelder is a grape that is also common in Germany, but also gives wonderful results in Central Limburg.
8. Pinot Noir 2022 - De Wijngaardsberg
A rare Limburg Pinot Noir with finesse. Light ruby red, with aromas of cherry, strawberry and a hint of spiciness.
Limburg wineries you should know about
In addition to the wines mentioned above, the wineries themselves deserve a spotlight:
- De Wijngaardsberg (Ulestraten): renowned for their sparkling and white wines
- Apostelhoeve (Maastricht): pioneer and figurehead of Limburg viticulture
- Wijngoed Thorn (Thorn): young but ambitious winemaker with surprisingly good results
- Op gen Hoes (Margraten): family farm with love for the Riesling grape
