1. Elsloërbos & Castle Elsloo - 5 to 10 km.

Starting point: Elsloo Castle
Sights: Elsloërbos, Castle Elsloo, Scharberg, creek valley
Distance: by choice - several loops possible

This route is a hidden gem. You start from the picturesque Castle Elsloo, located at the edge of the nature reserve the Elsloërbos. Within minutes you are among ancient trees, winding paths and gently flowing water of the Meuse River.

Depending on your time or condition, you can make a short loop (5 km) or continue walking towards Geulle and back. The route is well marked and mostly unpaved.

Starting point: Chalet Bergrust, Maastricht

Distance: ±7 km (circular walk)

An impressive walk just outside the city. You walk along the limestone walls of the ENCI quarry, with vistas over the Maas valley, and can visit Fort Sint Pieter along the way. A tough climb takes you to the panorama point overlooking Maastricht.

Extra fun: spot wild Konik horses and kingfishers in the area. This route is popular, so preferably go during the week or early in the day.

3. Savelsbos & Rijckholt - 6 to 10 km.

Starting point: Rijckholt or Gronsveld
Sights: Savels forest, prehistoric flint mines, hollow roads
Distance: approx. 6-10 km

A classic among hikers. The Savelsbos, southeast of Maastricht, is a slope forest full of biodiversity, with spectacular trails among the beeches and oaks. Along the way you'll pass ancient flint mines and see traces of prehistoric inhabitants.
